Brandstatter, Dierdorf team up to call Michigan football on radio

No one will question the credentials of Michigan’s new radio team.

Up until now, there were many questions about who would replace Frank Beckman, who was let go after 34 years as the play-by-play man on the Wolverines football network. As it turned out, Dave Brandon and IMG Radio looked only a couple feet.

Jim Brandstatter, who was Beckman’s color analyst for the entire 34-year run, will move over to do play-by-play, while Michigan football legend Dan Dierdorf will do color.

Dierdorf, who played with Brandstatter on Bo Schembechler’s offensive line in 1969 and 1970, is a member of both the college and pro football Halls of Fame, and was a network TV announcer from 1985 to 2013.

"I’m really excited about the challenge of moving to play-by-play," Brandstatter said in a statement. "I have huge shoes to fill, but I have learned so much from the great ones I’ve worked with and I can’t wait to get started."

Dierdorf is also looking forward to teaming up with his long-time friend.

"I’m so excited to be able to come back to my alma mater and contribute in this manner," he said. "This is the only broadcasting job that I would have considered after retiring from the network television."
