Kings guard Ben Simmons tears his Achilles tendon in practice

Ben Simmons tore his right Achilles tendon in practice, ending his comeback attempt this season with the Sacramento Kings before the season even started

1 DAY AGO • Associated Press

Ben Simmons - Suffers torn Achilles Simmons is believed to have suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during practice Sunday, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

Impact Simmons was seemingly poised for a comeback campaign after being out of the league following the 2024-25 season, but his return will be delayed due to a suspected Achilles tear suffered during practice. A heartbreaking development for the 30-year-old pro, who was performing at a high level throughout the preseason and expected to start on Opening Night. His injury figures to impact the Kings' offensive plan, likely resulting in more ball-handling responsibilities for rookie Darius Acuff.

Domantas Sabonis - Shows promise for full load Sabonis tallied 14 points (4-9 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 5-10 FT), 10 rebounds and one assist over 30 minutes in Friday's 126-97 preseason loss to the Spurs.

Impact Sabonis notched a double-double despite a dreadful night at the charity stripe. Sabonis has been on a long, bumpy road back to elite form, but getting a full 30-minute run in the preseason finale is an encouraging sign of his readiness after missing most of last season with a knee injury.

Darius Acuff Jr. - Adequate in limited action Acuff logged 13 points (5-12 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-4 FT), one rebound, two assists and one block over 19 minutes during Friday's 126-97 preseason loss to the Spurs.

Impact Acuff had a quieter night in limited minutes, as the lopsided score kept Sacramento's starters on the bench late in the second half. Still, the rookie reached double figures in all four preseason games and averaged 17.3 points, including a 25-point, eight-assist effort against Golden State. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 draft is set to open the season as the Kings' starting point guard, putting Acuff on track to be one of the season's most productive rookies.

Ben Simmons - Packs stat line in loss Simmons amassed 14 points (5-9 FG, 4-4 FT), eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal in 26 minutes in Friday's 126-97 preseason loss to the Spurs.

Impact Simmons drew the starter in the finale after scoring seven points in nine minutes off the bench in his only other appearance. The former No. 1 overall pick sat out all of 2025-26 before signing a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Kings in September, and he's expected to back up Darius Acuff at point guard. It seemed Simmons had all but exhausted his chances to make an impact at this level, but he'll get another chance to make a difference in Sacramento.

2 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE

Zach LaVine - Logs 20 points in 30 minutes aVine generated 20 points (6-12 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 7-7 FT), three rebounds, three assists and three steals over 30 minutes during Friday's 126-97 preseason loss to the Spurs.

Impact LaVine led the Kings in scoring and posted his best preseason outing, nearly doubling his previous high of 11 points. The Kings went winless in the preseason, and they'll need LaVine's veteran production to get off to a good start against the Clippers in the season opener.

2 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE

Ben Simmons - Sniffs triple-double Friday Simmons ended with 14 points (5-9 FG, 4-4 FT), eight rebounds, seven assists and one steal across 26 minutes in Friday's 126-97 preseason loss to San Antonio.

Impact Simmons had a productive game to end the preseason, narrowly missing a triple-double. The 30-year-old has appeared in 383 regular-season games for the 76ers, Nets and Clippers throughout his career, averaging 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.5 steals over 31.1 minutes per contest. Simmons appears to be in fantastic shape, and while he isn't an efficient shooter, he is an all-around producer when healthy.

Impact Monk has been dealing with left ankle soreness throughout training camp and the preseason. While he hasn't been ruled out for Opening Night against Los Angeles, his availability will hinge on "how the ankle responds" leading up to the contest. If Monk isn't available, Nique Clifford should be considered the favorite to see more minutes.
