Can the Chargers mend their relationship with Eric Weddle?

Published Jun. 15, 2015 11:37 p.m. ET

Eric Weddle's agent made it sound like his client is all but ready to move on next offseason.

Still, it sounds like there's no rush from Chargers general manager Tom Telesco to ink the team's defensive leader.

"We're happy he's here, and we'll get to it (Weddle's contract) after the season if that's the way it goes," Telesco told 1090 AM Radio. "Hopefully, we can still keep him here a long time, and we'll see how it goes."

Maybe a wait-and-see approach isn't so prudent. Weddle talled a team-leading 114 tackles last season. Take that element out of John Pagano's defense, and who knows how the Bolts are in 2014.

Telesco and the Chargers have leverage for now. But meeting the star of their secondary somewhere in the middle might be wise, considering there are three other AFC West teams who'd love to sign him in 2016.
