Lions place Haloti Ngata on NFI list to start camp
Haloti Ngata's impact with his new team has been put on hold, as the Detroit Lions have decided to place the five-time Pro Bowler on the non-football injury (NFI) list for the start of training camp. The Lions announced the news on their official website on Monday afternoon.
Ngata, 31, came to the Lions this offseason via trade, after nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He is expected to help fill the void left behind by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent this spring.
Although he's a better run-stuffer than he is pass-rusher at 6-foot-4 and 340 pounds, Ngata has notched a respectable 25.5 career sacks. Last season, he was particularly disruptive, forcing two fumbles and defending a career-high eight passes (including two interceptions), despite missing four games.
With Ngata on the sidelines, free agency acquisition Tyrunn Walker and second-year pro Caraun Walker are the leading candidates to eat up his reps.
Ngata is eligible to start practicing as soon as he's healthy.
