Chargers GM Telesco on Weddle: 'We're just not at their numbers'

Published Jun. 14, 2015 11:57 a.m. ET

Slow-going contract talks have left Chargers star safety Eric Weddle feeling disrespected.

General manager Tom Telesco certainly understands that frustration, but says the team stood by its promise to talk with Weddle's people after the NFL Draft.

"And we talked multiple times," Telesco told ESPN. "We listened to their concerns about his current contract. We listened to their complaints about playing too much. And we read through their statistical analysis and their financial comparisons."

Then, Telesco and his staff decided they're "just not at their number right now." There's no ulterior motive or personal vendetta against one of the top players on the team.

Weddle will still be the third-highest safety in the league next season. He'll earn a little less on the year if he decides to forgo mandatory minicamp.

"Each negotiation, each discussion is just different," Telesco said. "In his case, he's up there at the top of the market (of NFL safeties) where he's paid right now."
