Quick Hits: Verlander, Rondon on DL

Early News: Pitchers Justin Verlander (triceps strain) and Bruce Rondon (biceps tendinitis) will start the regular season on the disabled list.

But Verlander’s start in sixth game of the season has not been ruled out.

Tom Gage — Well, that’s not any way for the season to start — with pitching problems at the end of camp. How is Brad Ausmus’ mood?

Dana Wakiji — He’s always pretty levelheaded. He said that injuries are part of the game and you can bury your head in your hands or find a way to get the job done.

TG — Who will make the staff that would not have, Dana?

DW — I think Blaine Hardy and Angel Nesbitt have a good chance now. Nesbitt hasn’t pitched above Double-A. But he’s starting today against the Yankees so we’ll see how he does.

TG — Rondon’s tendinitis sounds the more serious condition of the two. No timetable for when he will throw again, right?

DW — Ausmus said biceps tendinitis is common, especially in spring training. But he also said Rondon will not throw again until the soreness is gone.

Then he’ll have to pitch somewhere and show that he can throw in back-to-back games before he’s ready to join the major league staff.
