Steelers claim former Michigan QB Devin Gardner

Published May. 19, 2015 11:44 p.m. ET

The Steelers have been awarded former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner off waivers from the New England Patriots.

Signed by New England as an undrafted free agent earlier this month, Gardner was released on Monday.

A change from quarterback to receiver was likely going to be necessary for Gardner to make an NFL roster, and it looks like the Steelers share that view based on how they announced the transaction on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 216-pound Gardner completed 174-of-283 passes for 1,896 yards and 10 touchdowns with 15 interceptions in 12 games as a senior at Michigan last year.

This wouldn't be the first time the Steelers have attempted to convert a collegiate quarterback to receiver. Antwaan Randle-El spent nine seasons in the NFL, five with the Steelers, after four years as the quarterback at Indiana.
