Position switch for LB Werner as part of Colts' new depth chart
The Colts drafted Bjoern Werner in the first round in 2013 in the hopes he would develop into a pass-rushing threat.
With the release of the team's first unofficial depth chart in advance of the preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, it appears the team is switching gears with Werner.
The 6-foot-3, 257-pound Werner is listed as the Colts' backup strong-side linebacker, behind starter Erik Walden.
Last year, Werner was listed as the team's starting rush linebacker after the injury to Robert Mathis. This year, with Mathis still out, that job is held by newcomer Trent Cole.
In his new role, Werner will be asked to drop back into coverage more. He said he's enjoying the new position.
“You need to know everything,” Werner said, via the Indianapolis Star. “It’s dropping (into coverage) more. At rush, it’s just basically put your hand down and rush a little more. I really like (the strong side). It’s a lot of fun because you just learn so much as a football player.”
Werner, who has 6.5, sacks through his first two seasons in the league, said he was unconcerned with the perception he hasn't panned out as a pass-rusher.
“People can say what they want,” Werner said. “But me as a player, I don’t look at it that way. I think I have a lot of stuff to work on in the run and the pass and coverage – everything. I’m trying to be better. What people out there say, that’s (the media’s) job. I can’t change anything.”
Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said Wednesday Werner will continue to see time at rush linebacker, in addition to working on the strong side.
