NFL free agency: Victor Cruz released by Giants
The New York Giants are moving on from wide receiver Victor Cruz, releasing the 30-year-old to save cap space for the upcoming free agency period.
In a move many believed to be long coming, general manager Jerry Reese released Victor Cruz, saving $7.5 million in cap space for New York. Depending on the final figure, the Giants will have roughly $30 million to improve their team with, likely looking to upgrade both the linebackers and offensive line.
Cruz, 30, had 39 catches for 586 yards and a touchdown in 2016, filling the role of New YUork’s third receiver. After falling below Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard on the depth chart, it became increasingly apparent that Cruz would be looking for his second NFL home next year.
The New Jersey native was a Pro Bowler in 2012 and a second-team All-Pro in 2011, leading the Giants to their fourth Super Bowl title that season. Cruz’s best statistical effort was the 2011 season, racking up 82 catches and 1,536 yards with nine touchdowns. In 2014, Cruz ruptured his patellar tendon and missed all but six games before sitting out the entire 2015 campaign.
His market is likely solid, but not for elite money. Considering his age and injury history, Cruz likely gets a two-year deal laden with incentives. Look for a contender to want him as a role player, while a franchise like the San Francisco 49ers or Los Angeles Rams might see him as a starter to be relied upon.
