Rams’ E.J. Gaines hopes to win out starting cornerback job
St. Louis Rams cornerback E.J. Gaines hopes to impress head coach Jeff Fisher this offseason that he will have no choice but to put him in as the starting cornerback.
Gaines has worked hard this offseason on the field, as well as in the film room. He is trying to become a more versatile corner so they can play him all over the field. Gaines has been working primarily opposite Janoris Jenkins during OTAs. Gaines hopes to learn from Jenkins and develop a chemistry so the two can feed off of each other.
"I feel like my all-around game can be better," Gaines said. "I’m working a lot on my man to man coverage, press man and off-man. The concepts of routes. That’s a lot of the things the coaches and Janoris talk about. He has great instincts and able to jump routes. You see things like that and I feel like that’s where I can grow as far as the corner spot."
Gaines believes his offseason work will win him the job once the regular starts. He is willing to play anywhere the coaches need him, but has his heart set on the cornerback job.
"I feel like they know I have high expectations out of myself to come out here and compete like I usually do, whether that’s at corner, nickel, special teams, whatever," Gaines said. "I’ll come out and compete for the job but I’m definitely going for that corner spot."
