How Chip Kelly's firing impacts the Miami Dolphins
The Philadelphia Eagles made somewhat of a surprising move on Tuesday night, releasing head coach Chip Kelly. The former Oregon coach lasted just under three full years with the Eagles, posting a 26-21 record with one playoff appearance in 2013.
He's a head coach who obviously brought a different style of play to the league, giving the Eagles an up-tempo offense that never really fit the players he had on the field. It's unclear whether he'll return to college or give the NFL another shot, but his firing could have an impact on the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins currently have Dan Campbell as their interim head coach, but he's not likely to receive a long-term contract with the team. Though Miami did improve a bit under his command, the Dolphins will probably finish with a 5-11 record, which isn't good enough for any franchise.
With that said, Kelly is a big-name coach but isn't likely to draw much interest from the Dolphins. His former assistant, Bill Lazor, was the Dolphins' offensive coordinator last season and for some of this season, but his scheme failed miserably despite having a great deal of talent to work with.
However, here's how Kelly's firing impacts the Dolphins: more competition.
The Dolphins now have to compete with the Eagles in the offseason when both teams search for their next head coaches. If the Dolphins hope to hire a guy like Adam Gase from the Chicago Bears, they'll have to make themselves a more attractive landing spot than the Eagles. The same goes for Hue Jackson of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Granted, the Dolphins have a talented quarterback under contract for the next few seasons in Ryan Tannehill, while the Eagles do not. But Miami has plenty of issues of its own. Lamar Miller is set to be a free agent, as are several key defensive players like Olivier Vernon and Louis Delmas.
The Eagles are probably seen as a better team right now, but finding a head coach to fit their personnel will be an important step. And that head coach could also be a candidate for the Dolphins.
