Lions QB Stafford to begin throwing

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz confirmed reports during his weekly radio appearance Tuesday on WXYT-FM in Detroit that starting QB Matthew Stafford (right shoulder) will begin some light throwing this week.

“That’s just part of his rehab and where he is. I think we’re happy with where he is based on the injury that he had, and like I said as soon as he’s able to do things like that we’ll sort of cut him loose to do it but not before,” Schwartz said. “We’ve said this for a long time, the one thing we want to measure or weigh is ability to get back on the field versus when it’s smart to put him back on the field. And we’re going to make the right decision. It’s his throwing shoulder. We’re going to put him back when he’s healthy, when he’s able to make a play.”

Stafford is likely at least two weeks away from being able to play, but he’s finally on his way back from the shoulder injury he suffered during the season opener at the Chicago Bears.
