Published Dec. 1, 2013 11:49 p.m. ET

49ers left tackle Joe Staley injured his right knee early in Sunday's game against St. Louis and didn't return.

St. Louis left tackle Jake Long then went down late in the third quarter and was being examined for a head injury after being hit by teammate Zac Stacy.

Staley was hurt at the 11:13 mark of the first quarter when he landed awkwardly while grabbing his knee. Staley stayed on the ground for several minutes before walking off the field on his own. Trainers and medical staff examined Staley on the bench then he headed to the locker room. The team says he's done for the day.

Alex Boone moved into Staley's spot and Joe Looney came in after making his NFL debut Monday. San Francisco tight end Vance McDonald injured an ankle.
