Peyton Manning is now Brock Osweiler's backup on the Broncos

Peyton Manning is ready for "the next step" in his return, according to Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak.

But that step will be right behind Brock Osweiler, who will start ahead of Manning against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday -- and for the foreseeable future.

Kubiak declined to speculate on whether Manning could take additional steps back to the starting job. It seems to indicate the Broncos are set on starting Osweiler for their playoff run.

Credit Kubiak for walking the tightrope perfectly here. He transitioned to a quarterback who better fit his offense, but never put Manning down as he worked his way back from a foot injury.
