NFLPA challenger Gilbert wants 18-game season, accuses owners of collusion
Former NFL defensive lineman Sean Gilbert, who has announced he will run against DeMaurice Smith for executive director of the NFL Players Association, is a man with a plan.
Gilbert released his formal platform during a press conference this week, and it wasn't lacking in drastic changes. Included in his 23-point plan is a proposition to adopt an 18-game regular-season schedule, which he says is something that many current players are on board with.
"Once I broke down what 18 games meant," Gilbert said, via ESPN.com, "in terms of playing only two preseason games and getting an increase in salary, they understood what I'm trying to implement in terms of growing the game."
Gilbert's plan for a longer regular season is only part of his bigger plan to terminate the league's current collective bargaining agreement, as he told media he has proof that NFL owners are guilty of collusion, which would allow the CBA to be terminated early. If Gilbert is able to negotiate a new CBA, he also outlines that he would push to raise the minimum salary to $1 million, reduce rookie contracts to three years and would increase roster sizes from 53 to 57, among many more changes.
