NFL to look at bigger playoffs, longer PATs next month

NEW YORK -- The NFL plans to discuss expanded playoffs at the owners' meetings next month in Atlanta.

The league also plans to experiment with snapping the ball from the 15-yard line on extra points, to make them more challenging. A kick from that distance would wind up being about 32 yards. Previously, the plan had been to experiment with moving kicks back to the 20.

Previous plans to expand the playoffs have proposed adding two teams to make the postseason a 14-team affair. While the players union has strongly opposed lengthening the regular season to 18 games, an expanded playoff has faced less opposition.

The timing of a vote on the expanded playoffs is uncertain.
