Menelik Watson should still be in the Raiders' right tackle race

Published Jun. 18, 2015 12:06 a.m. ET

Austin Howard is considered the front-runner for the right tackle job after his shift from guard.

But if head coach Jack Del Rio's new policy holds up, he'll have to earn his job at camp-- and keep talented players like Menelik Watson at bay.

Watson has, up until this point, disappointed. The former second-round pick hasn't proved he's starting material since leaving Florida State in 2013.

That status could change under the Del Rio regime, however. Offensive line coach Mike Tice singled out Watson as one of the players he'll be keeping an eye on this summer.

The ex-Seminole could spruce up his pass-blocking technique. Yet, at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, he could be more suited to run block than Howard is.

It's not out of the question that Howard could return to a more natural fit at guard should Watson step his game up in 2015.
