Dirk Nowitzki mulls racing Peyton Manning in 40-yard dash

Published Oct. 23, 2015 1:27 a.m. ET

Dirk Nowitzki and Peyton Manning are both 18-year veterans in their respective sports and have accomplished much during their storied careers.

While Nowitzki’s 18th season in the NBA will officially begin when the Mavericks take on the Suns on Wednesday night, Manning has already been battling it out on the gridiron for almost two months now. Unfortunately for the Broncos, he hasn’t looked like the same dominant regular-season quarterback he’s been in years past, and it’s clear that his arm strength is dwindling and the wear and tear from sustaining many hits and attempting thousands of passes is taking a toll on him.

Even in his prime, though, Manning was known more for his arm and football IQ than his mobility. He ran a 4.8-second 40-yard dash at the combine before being drafted in 1998 and also said he ran a 5.1-second dash when he was a senior in high school.

Judging by his past results and the effect Father Time has had on his body, it’s safe to say if Manning ran a 40 now, it might take him awhile to complete the task.

Well, Nowitzki wants to see him do it. In fact, the Mavs superstar has even contemplated racing him.

Nowitzki is 37 years old, while Manning is 39. The race would certainly be interesting to watch, and teammates of both players are trying to make it happen.
