Damontre Moore excited for new opportunity in Steve Spagnuolo's defensive scheme
After toiling away on the bench for the majority of defensive snaps under former defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, there is a lot of buzz surrounding New York Giants defensive end Damontre Moore. On just 231 pass rush snaps in 2014, Moore racked up six sacks, 12 quarterback hits, 13 quarterback pressures and two batted passes, according to Pro Football Focus. According to Pro Football Focus’ pass rush productivity metric, which measures pressure on a per snap basis, only seven 4-3 defensive ends were more productive than Moore. The third year pro is excited for his opportunity to prove himself to new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in a defensive scheme that he already feels comfortable in.
"New coach, new opportunity," Moore said after Wednesday's OTAs practice to reporters, according to Dan Grazziano of ESPN. "Same old goals."
With Jason Pierre-Paul entrenched in the right defensive end spot, Moore's clearest path to playing time is at left defensive end. After losing out on the starting left defensive end job in 2014 to Mathias Kiwanuka, Moore believes Spagnuolo's scheme gives him a leg up heading into 2015.
"This system is pretty similar to the system I played my first two years in college. So it's just about getting in there and proving myself," said Moore.
If Moore can clean up his mental mistakes and become a better run defender, he has the talent to serve as the team’s primary left defensive end in 2015.
