49ers lineman Quinton Dial helped hold the flag during National Anthem
Although San Francisco 49ers-Los Angeles Rams' Monday night game occurred one day after the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the crowd at Levi's Stadium paused for a moment of observance prior to the game with a large flag held across the playing field during the National Anthem.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the anthem alongside teammate Eric Reid, and Kaepernick has stated he intends to continue to do so in a protest against racial inequality and police brutality.
One thing that didn't draw as much attention: When military members surrounded the flag, 49ers defensive lineman Quinton Dial stepped from the team's sideline to join them.
The 26-year-old Dial started at defensive tackle for the Niners, recorded four tackles and also deflected a Case Keenum pass in the second quarter that linebacker NaVorro Bowman intercepted.
On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks locked arms in unity before their opener against the Miami Dolphins, and several other players around the league protested in different ways.
While Kaepernick has been accused of being unpatriotic during his protest, many military service members and veterans have been vocal in support of the quarterback, supporting his right to protest.
