Norton scores 15 points, UAB holds off FIU 74-69

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Nick Norton scored 15 points and Alabama-Birmingham held off Florida International 74-69 on Thursday night.

UAB (19-4, 9-1 Conference USA) led by five at half and as many as 17 early in the second. FIU chipped away, and got it to two with 34 seconds left after Eric Nottage made a pair from the line to make it 68-66. But Dirk Williams answered with two free throws, then after FIU missed a 3-pointer, got loose for a dunk for a 72-66 lead.

Elmo Stephen drilled a 3 with three seconds left to make it a one-possession game, but Norton made a pair of free throws to ice it.

Robert Brown scored 14 points for UAB. Tosin Mehinti added 13 points and seven rebounds, William Lee had 11 points and Chris Cokley had 10.

Daviyon Draper led FIU (11-12, 5-5) with 16 points. Adrian Diaz added 14 points.
