NFL coaching tracker: Latest news and updates

Published Jan. 12, 2015 10:57 a.m. ET

While the biggest headines of Wednesday naturally came from the mouth of Rex Ryan as he was officially introduced as new Buffalo Bill head coach, the Bay area truly took center stage with both NFL teams filling their head-coaching vacancies.

The big surprise not many saw coming: The San Francisco 49ers promoted defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to head coach, filling the void left by Jim Harbaugh's departure to Michigan. While Tomsula has coached the Niners' D-line since 2007, his only head-coaching experience -- other than serving briefly as 49ers interim coach in 2010) came in 2006 . . . with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe.

Across the bay, the Oakland Raiders have reportedly tabbed Jack Del Rio as head coach. As opposed to the 49ers' choice, Del Rio does have head-coaching experience in the NFL, having led the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 68-71 record in nine seasons from 2003-11.
