Smith, the sixth overall pick in April, missed all of training camp in a contract impasse. Two days after he signed, he broke a bone in his left foot during a non-contact drill.
Coach Marvin Lewis said Monday that Smith will participate in some practice drills this week. The Bengals play the Chicago Bears on Sunday, then have a bye week. Lewis thinks Smith could be ready to play in the following game, against the Ravens at Paul Brown Stadium.
