Reports: NFL clears Dolphins of tampering in Suh signing
As the world continues to reverberate from the Deflategate fallout, the NFL on Tuesday reportedly closed the books on another investigation involving a high-profile player . . . and it barely registered a blip.
According to multiple reports, the NFL cleared the Miami Dolphins of tampering charges stemming from their pursuit -- and ultimate signing -- of free-agent defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
Suh signed a six-year, $114 million deal with the Dolphins on March 11, just after the free-agent signing period opened. But terms of the deal, including contract specifics, were leaked to the media days in advance, leading to the tampering investigation.
As the Miami Herald reported in Tuesday's story, the investigation was at the behest of the NFL, as Suh's old team, the Detroit Lions, said in March they did not want to pursue a tampering case against the Dolphins.
The ruling means Miami will not be subject to any additional penalty or fine which could have been levied had the league found the club did tamper.
The Lions selected Suh second overall in the 2010 Draft, enjoying four Pro Bowl and three first-team All-Pro seasons in his five years in Detroit.
The NFL on Monday suspended New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for four games and fined the club $1 million and docked it two draft picks for punishment in the Deflategate scandal, where the Patriots are alleged to have underinflated balls used in their AFC Championship Game victory over the Colts in January.
