Raiders QB Derek Carr leaves game with severe leg injury

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:26 p.m. ET

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr left Saturday’s game vs. the Colts with a lower-body injury.

The Super Bowl hopes of the Oakland Raiders may have been dashed Saturday afternoon when quarterback Derek Carr left the game with an injury to his right leg. Carr was sacked in the fourth quarter by Trent Cole and his right foot was squished under the weight of the two bodies.

Carr was writhing in pain on the field as he motioned for Oakland trainers and medical personnel to attend to him on the field with the Raiders leading the Colts, 33-14. Carr was later examined on the sideline with the Raiders offensive line surrounding him and Raider Nation holding their breath the extent of the injury isn’t as bad as it appeared on television.

He was later taken off the field by cart and CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson reported they attempted to put an air cast on his right leg/foot. Jason La Canfora reports Carr has his Achilles tended to as he fought back tears as he headed to the locker room to have x-rays to determine the severity of the injury.

Carr has only been sacked 16 times this year as the Raiders offensive line has been as good as any outside of the Dallas Cowboys line. Unfortunately, it’s that one hit today that could crush the team’s hopes of a long playoff run as the team is having its best season in more than a decade.

With Carr out of action, Matt McGloin is in at quarterback as he’ll look to hold the lead over the Colts. If Carr is out for extended time and can’t play in the postseason, this will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Raiders on Christmas Eve.

Hopefully, the x-rays come back negative and Carr won’t have any broken bones, but even if that’s the case, an ankle sprain could take weeks to recover from. The Raiders may not have that much time.
