Andy MacPhail to leave Orioles

Published Oct. 7, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Andy MacPhail, as expected, is leaving the Orioles, according to major league sources.

However, Buck Showalter will remain manager rather than move into a role as the team’s top decision-maker after owner Peter Angelos failed to persuade MacPhail to stay with the club as GM. The team is compiling a list of candidates for the GM opening, according to a source.

MacPhail, 58, will not remain with the Orioles in any capacity, sources say. Marlins assistant GM Dan Jennings and Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava are among the executives under consideration as the new general manager, sources say.

Angelos gave Showalter the choice of remaining manager or becoming GM, and at one point even broached the idea of Showalter filling both roles, according to sources.

The Orioles hired MacPhail on June 20, 2007, but during his tenure failed to end their streak of consecutive losing seasons, which is now at 14.

MacPhail previously had been the Cubs’ team president, serving in that role from Sept. 9, 1994 to Oct. 1, 2006.
