Twins edge Gophers 2-1 in exhibition game

Published Feb. 22, 2018 11:46 p.m. ET

Outfielder LaMonte Wade scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to lift an inexperienced Minnesota Twins squad to a 2-1 exhibition win over the Minnesota Gophers on Thursday.

Gophers freshman Ryan Duffy walked Wade to start the inning, before Brian Navarreto reached on a single. Nelson Molina reached after being hit by a pitch, before Duffy's wild pitch to Wade ended the game.

The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Brock Stassi's single scored Nick Gordon from third. The Gophers struck back in the third thanks to Micah Coffey, who scored Alex Boxwell with a sacrifice fly.

The loss kicked off a four-game Florida road trip for the Gophers, who now face Boston College, Chicago State and Mount St. Mary's as part of the Snowbird Classic.
