Theismann compares Redskins name change to ... Caitlyn Jenner?!

Published Jul. 9, 2015 5:40 p.m. ET

Most figures in the sports world have been very careful to say all the right things about Caitlyn Jenner in the past few weeks. Every once in a while, though, somebody goes and puts his foot in his big ol' mouth.

Joe Theismann was that somebody Thursday.

In a visit to the set of the FOX News program “Outnumbered,” the former Washington Redskins quarterback was asked for his thoughts on his former team’s controversial name, which had its trademark registration canceled Wednesday by a federal judge. Theismann’s take was . . . controversial? Original? Entirely nonsensical?

Try to figure out what the heck Theismann is talking about and decide for yourself.

“It brings up an interesting debate,” Theismann said. “Bruce Jenner versus Caitlyn Jenner. Bruce Jenner, they want to maybe change the medals from Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner because that is who he is now, or she is now. So I think you will always be — there will be a time in history where whatever you were, you are. Whatever you will be going forward, that is what you will become.”

Got all that?

Theismann also said he was “very proud to have represented the Native-American nations of (this) country” in his 12-year career with the Redskins, which is great, except that’s not necessarily how team nicknames work. Theismann must think Joe Namath was representing all the airplanes of this nation as quarterback of the New York Jets, or that Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino proudly represented all the marine mammals of the sea.
