Seattle Mariners Place Robinson Cano on Disabled List

An injury plagued 2017 campaign just keeps getting worse for the Seattle Mariners, as they have placed Robinson Cano on the disabled list.

The Seattle Mariners made quite a few moves this offseason, with the goal being a postseason berth. They certainly appeared to be well on their way to that goal, adding Drew Smyly and completely revamping their outfield. It certainly looked as though the Mariners would contend, and maybe even be able to battle the Rangers and Astros for the American League West.

And then, the season started. Not only did the Mariners get out of the gates slowly, but they have been decimated by injuries. Four of their five original starting pitchers are on the disabled list. The bullpen is in shambles. And now, Robinson Cano has been added to the injury report, as the tenth Mariner to be placed on the disabled list.

Although Cano has not played since the 10th of May, his time on the shelf can only be backdated to the 13th due to the new rules governing the 10 day DL. In his place, the Mariners have called up Boog Powell, who is, alas, not related to the former Orioles star of the same name.

Chances are, Cano's stay on the disabled list will not last far beyond the minimum stay. However, the timing could prove disastrous, as Seattle had finally gotten themselves close to the .500 mark. Taking his production from the lineup, as Cano has produced a .296/.362/.533 batting line with eight home runs, may keep the Mariners from getting back into contention.

To replace Cano, at least for the time being, the Mariners are planning on using a combination of Taylor Motter and Mike Freeman. However, Motter has cooled off considerably after a hot start, with a .200/.300/.286 batting line in his last 40 plate appearances, and just three extra base hits, all doubles. Freeman, meanwhile, owns a .140/.218/.220 batting line in 55 career plate appearances in the majors.

If Robinson Cano is going to be lost for any length of time, the Seattle Mariners would be in a great deal of trouble. Hopefully, this will just be a quick stint on the disabled list.
