Nationals’ Strasburg on disabled list with neck nerve issue
MIAMI (AP) Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 10-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals because of a nerve problem in the star pitcher's neck.
The team said the right-hander has a cervical nerve impingement. Strasburg did not pitch for the Nationals between June 8 and July 20 because of an inflamed right shoulder.
''His MRI on his shoulder came back clean,'' Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Thursday. ''He did a nerve test and he has a slight impingement in his neck so he's going to see a neurologist, and right now there is no timetable for his return.''
Strasburg allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings last Friday against Atlanta. Strasburg argued with ace Max Scherzer after leaving the game, and Martinez met with them in his office afterward.
''Yesterday he came into my office and he said he felt it,'' Martinez said. ''We had the doctor look at him, and we thought the best thing was to put him on the DL and get him checked out.''
Strasburg went to the Los Angeles area for additional tests. He also dealt with a neck injury in 2015.
''It could be related,'' Martinez said. ''We don't know for sure until they run that neurological test on him.''
Strasburg is 6-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 14 starts.
Left-hander Tommy Milone was brought up from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Strasburg's roster spot, and infielder Jose Marmolejos was designated for assignment. Third baseman Anthony Rendon was placed on the paternity list.
