Michigan State Recruiting: 4-star Theo Day should be MSU's top 2018 QB target

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:50 p.m. ET

Michigan State recruiting offered four-star quarterback Theo Day from Dearborn, Mich., and he should be the top 2018 target.

Now that the 2017 class is essentially set in stone, Michigan State can start looking toward the 2018 cycle and, most importantly, the quarterback position. The Spartans took a step in the right direction at the end of January, extending an offer to four-star Dearborn (Mich.) Divine Child quarterback, Theo Day.

The Spartans added Messiah deWeaver in 2016, Rocky Lombardi in 2017 and are now looking at potentially adding the in-state quarterback to the 2018 class. That would mark three straight capable starters in a row.

If you’re looking for the next quarterback that is cut from the same cloth as Connor Cook, you may have to look no further than the Divine Child gunslinger.

Day has all the tools necessary to compete for the starting job in his first couple of years. Mark Dantonio loves pocket passers with strong arms and Day can be just that, but he’s also capable of tucking the ball and running with it. The 6-foot-5, 197-pound quarterback is athletic and he has a strong arm that can fit the ball into tight spaces.

It’s still very early in his recruitment and Day has just eight offers, the most recent from Boston College, but the Spartans look to be the favorite. The staff needs to make sure he’s a priority because he has the talent, potential and attitude of a successful quarterback.

The four-star quarterback ranks No. 183 in the country and as the eighth-best pro-style quarterback in the class, according to 247Sports. He’s also the fourth-best in-state prospect.
