Report: Sharper told witnesses sex wasn't consensual
Darren Sharper, who is facing charges or under investigation for alleged sexual assaults in multiple states, admitted to witnesses that the sex he and an acquaintance had with two women last September in New Orleans wasn't consensual, according to a detective's report detailed by USA Today.
The former NFL safety and five-time Pro Bowler is currently jailed in Los Angeles after surrendering last week on warrants related to alleged rapes in New Orleans. Sharper, 38, also is under investigation in sexual assault cases in Florida, Nevada and Arizona and has pleaded not guilty to charges he drugged and raped two women he met at a nightclub in Los Angeles.
Erik Nunez, 26, also has been charged with aggravated rape in the New Orleans incident, which police say occurred at an apartment on Sept. 23, 2013.
In a bail motion filed in the California case, Los Angeles County Investigator John Maccharella described a pattern in which the former football star met women at clubs or parties and lured them to a hotel room, where they were allegedly drugged and raped.
Lawyers for Sharper in the Los Angeles case have said they would prove that any sexual contact Sharper engaged in was consensual.
If convicted in the California case, Sharper could face more than 30 years in state prison. If convicted of aggravated rape in Louisiana, both Sharper and Nunez could face life imprisonment.
Sharper, who played in the NFL from 1997 to 2010 primarily with the Green Bay Packers, was selected All-Pro six times and played on two teams that reached the Super Bowl, one with the Packers as a rookie and a second with the Saints.
Sharper retired after the 2010 season. He was recently fired as an analyst for the NFL Network.
