Broncos offer Dumervil new deal
Elvis may not have permanently left the building.
Denver Broncos executive John Elway told the team’s multimedia web site Tuesday that a new contract was offered to defensive end Elvis Dumervil, who was cut after a restructured contract couldn’t be agreed upon.
The release was controversial as the Broncos and Dumervil’s agent had reportedly agreed upon a restructured contract. Dumervil, though, was cut when the Broncos didn’t receive the proper paperwork before last Friday’s deadline to strike a deal for salary cap relief.
The Broncos scored an immediate cap savings but also now must carry roughly $5 million in dead money even if Dumervil is ultimately re-signed.
Dumervil has since fired his previous agent and hired new representation.
Dumervil, 29, has spent all six of his NFL seasons with the Broncos. He has notched 37 sacks over the past three years, including 11 in 2012.
