Alabama State beats Prairie View A&M, 83-77

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Jamel Waters scored 24 points and Alabama State snapped a five-game losing streak with an 83-77 win over Prairie View A&M on Monday night.

Waters hit four 3-pointers and finished 7 of 10 from the field. Terrance LeFlore scored 18 points and Corvon Butler had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Hornets (7-14, 2-7 Southwestern).

Both teams were efficient offensively, shooting over 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line.

Jayrn Johnson led Prairie View A&M (1-20, 1-8) with 25 points, and Karim York added 20. The Panthers have lost seven in a row after earning their first win of the season over Southern on Jan. 5.

Alabama State took a game-high 18-point lead, 68-50, on two LeFlore free throws with 7:31 left. The Panthers cut the lead back below 10 after a York jumper with 1:41 to go, but never seriously threatened.
