Cleveland Browns: Kevin Hogan at the top of latest depth chart

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Cleveland Browns may be starting another rookie quarterback this season as Kevin Hogan is currently listed at the top of this week’s unofficial depth chart.

On the same day the Cavaliers and Indians are preparing to take part in one of the most special days in Cleveland sports history, the Cleveland Browns decided to join the fun by releasing this week’s unofficial depth chart.

Nothing looks too out of place until you set your eyes upon the quarterback position, where another new name is listed as the starter.

Kevin Hogan, who had a solid outing Sunday after Cody Kessler left with a concussion, is trying to become the second rookie to start at quarterback this season, following in the footsteps of Kessler. His backup, Joe Callahan, is also a rookie, so perhaps this is a new trend for the Browns.

This depth chart could change depending on Kessler’s health, but it would not be wise to rush him, or any player back from a concussion. With a record of 0-7, the Browns need to let Kessler recover.

Starting another quarterback adds to the disaster that is the 2016 season, but at least Hogan showed he is capable of running the offense. He only threw for 100 yards against the Bengals, but he did run for 104, helping fill the void of a hobbled Terrelle Pryor in the read-option packages.

But while Hogan is not a bad option at quarterback, the fact the Browns may start four different quarterbacks in eight games is just painful to think about. Accepting Hogan as the starter is almost accepting that it is normal for this type of turnover at the position.

It is just another example of the misfortune surrounding this franchise, although the quarterback position isn’t the only problem.

So while the focus of Cleveland sports fans shifts to the Indians and the Cavs, the Browns will keep trudging along in search of a win in 2016.

And the next attempt may be with yet another quarterback, making 2016 a truly special year to be a Clevelander.
