Texas Football Recruiting: Is TE Reese Leitao a Legitimate Target Now?

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:03 a.m. ET

After tight end, Reese Leitao announced his decommitment from the University of Nebraska, Texas may be a serious option for his next four years.

Texas football has been busy in the recruiting department over the past week. They sent out offers to three committed players: Tre Brown (Oklahoma), Derek Kerstetter (Oklahoma State), and Roshauud Paul (Texas A&M). None of the three have yet to flip to the Longhorns yet. JUCO kicker Joshua Rowland also became the first player to commit since Tom Herman took over as head coach in November.

Earlier in December, Texas sent an offer to Nebraska commitment Reese Leitao, who announced his intentions of going to Lincoln in August. He also made a visit to Austin last weekend. Just days later, the Jenks, OK native announced that he officially decommitted from the Cornhuskers in a message on Twitter. He noted that he will be “reopening” his recruitment.

According to 247Sports, Texas may now be the favorite to land Leitao. He also considered Arkansas State, Duke, and Houston, Herman’s former school, so the ties between the recruit and coach are there.

Leitao is a 6-foot-4, 234-pound tight end who’s considered to be a three-star recruit, according to 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 34 overall tight end in the 2017 class and the 11th ranked from Oklahoma. His overall ranking is 727th in the nation.

Among Texas’ current group of commits, there are no tight ends on the list. They initially targeted Blake Williams and Jacob Paulson, though, both of whom are not signed on with any school yet. There is wide receiver, Damion Miller, but a majority of the players arriving in 2017 seem to be on the opposite side of the ball, for now.

As we get closer to National Signing Day, the recruitment process is seemingly heating up for Texas. Who will be the next to receive an offer?
