Rob Lowe back on ice in another movie

Published Jun. 21, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Rob Lowe is back on the ice, but, no, it's not another "Youngblood" movie.

This time, Lowe is playing coach Dan Winters in the hockey movie "Breakaway," which tells the story of a Canadian pickup-game player of Indian descent (played by Vinay Virmani) who dreams of making it to the NHL, against the wishes of his traditional family.

Think "Bend it Like Beckham" on ice (the movie even features the same actor, Anupam Kher, playing the disapproving father in both movies).

Virmani's character Rajvinder Singh turns to Lowe's Winters, a former pro player who now drives a Zamboni, to coach his all-Indian team (called the Speedy Singhs) in a tournament, while battling discrimination from mainstream hockey players and his family's traditional values.

The movie is directed by Robert Lieberman, who first hit the ice as director of "D3: The Mighty Ducks," and features enormously popular Canadian comic Russell Peters. It's available on DVD this Tuesday.
