Missy Franklin throws out first pitch

Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin is adjusting to a new normal after winning five medals at the London Olympics.

Franklin has become a celebrity in Colorado and the nation after taking home four gold medals and a bronze at last month's Summer Games. She has been on late-night talk shows, introduced at the Denver Broncos' season opener and Saturday she threw out the first pitch at Coors Field.

''It has been an unbelievable whirlwind,'' Franklin said at Coors Field on Saturday. ''It has been so crazy but I've been able to do so many amazing things so it has been so exciting.

''I don't think my life will ever go back to the way it was before the Olympics, so I'm adjusting to a new normal.''

As much as she has enjoyed all the fanfare that comes with being an Olympic champion, Franklin has tried to get back to a routine during her senior year at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo. It hasn't been easy, but she got to experience a little of that normalcy by attending the Raiders' home football game Friday night and sitting with her classmates.

''I've been able to do some fun things that are just for me,'' she said.

Saturday she was back in the spotlight at the Colorado Rockies' game. She prepared for the task of throwing with a some help from one of the Rockies pitchers.

''(I was) nervous about throwing out the first pitch but I practiced a little bit beforehand with Matt (Belisle),'' she said.

Franklin didn't waste her moment. She trotted out to the front of the mound as Belisle crouched down behind the plate. Franklin stood in the stretch position, shook off a phantom sign from Belisle before lofting a pitch to his glove. She raised both arms when he caught the lob.

Monday she'll be back in the classroom trying to catch up her studies.

''I've been missing a lot of school lately but I've been trying to keep up with that,'' she said.

Franklin said she has made several campus visits and plans to make three more in October before making a decision. After that she can focus on being just a student and graduating from high school

''As soon as my college visits are over and I verbally commit to a school I think my life will calm down a lot,'' she said.
