Angels LHP Scott Kazmir headed to DL with bad back

Published Apr. 9, 2011 2:50 a.m. ET

Los Angeles Angels left-hander Scott Kazmir has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his lower back.

The Angels recalled Matt Palmer late Friday night to start Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, filling in for the struggling Kazmir.

After going 9-15 with a 5.77 ERA last year, Kazmir had a disastrous start to this season. He gave up five hits, five runs and two walks while hitting two batters and committing a balk in 1 2-3 innings against Kansas City last week.

Kazmir says his back became sore late last month in an exhibition game against the Dodgers, and it hasn't improved.

Palmer won 11 games for the Angels in 2009 and went 1-2 in 14 games last season.
