- For Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim, the jostling for European places came to a head in the Commerzbank-Arena. With Serge Gnabry in excellent form, the visitors Hoffenheim knew that they had a chance to leap-frog the home side and edge their way into a Champions League spot.

After a fairly cagey first half hour, Mark Uth, who grabbed a brace against Koln in the previous week, set up the first real chance of the game for the man on loan from newly crowned champions Bayern Munchen. Gnabry, though, only able to shoot wide.

Hoffenheim nearly took the lead four minutes later when a speculative effort from Andrej Kramaric nearly evaded Hradecky. The untracked keeper seemingly misjudging the spin on the Croatian's effort.

Just before the break, Frankfurt nearly made the breakthrough as both teams edged nearer to a goal. Hoffenheim had the better quality chances, but Frankfurt pressed hard. Marco Russ could not believe he hadn't made it 1-0, as Baumann pulled off a great reaction save. No goals at half time, but the kids were seeing a tactical masterclass from the two coaches.

The second half almost immediately delivered the goal that had been threatened in the first 45. Marco Fabián combined well with Marius Wolf to set up Luka Jovic who broke the deadlock four minutes into the half. The youngest player in the league with seven goals or more added to his tally, with his fourth goal in four games.

Hoffenheim reacted perfectly to going a goal down, and, in typical style, parity was returned by Serge Gnabry's strike seven minutes later. It was his fifth goal in five games, and it was celebrated with the same goal celebration as his last strike.

Frankfurt nearly got their much-looked-for second with 20 minutes to play. Marco Fabián, intent on booking a place in the Mexico World Cup squad, again involved, setting up substitute Sébastian Haller whose header rattled the bar. But Hoffenheim pounced to clear and kept proceedings level.

A 1-1 draw helped the home side more in their pursuit of international football. But it would have been unfair for either side to leave the field as losers.
