The Orioles hit 4 first-inning homers before completely collapsing

It’s tough to imagine how things could have started any better for the Orioles on Friday. Or how they could have ended any worse.

Baltimore hit not one, not two, not three … but four homers in the first inning before the Astros even recorded an out – the first time that has happened since 1900. Adam Jones, Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo all took Collin McHugh deep just 16 pitches into the frame.

Unfortunately for Baltimore, that wasn’t nearly enough. Not only did Houston answer with five runs in the top of the second inning, it turned the game into a blowout. By the time the dust settled, the Astros had a 15-8 win, thanks to four homers of their own. In all, the teams combined for 28 hits, including nine homers.

Orioles lefty Wade Miley, who was given that generous first-inning lead, didn’t make it out of the second inning. In fact, both starters still seemed shell-shocked after the game. From MLB.com:

Miley: "I'm just not executing pitches. You're not going to get anybody out throwing fastballs down the middle. That's just the way it is."

McHugh: "I don't know if I've ever been blitzed like that before in my career. Today's game in general was kind of a crazy game, and to start out like that is obviously not the way you draw it up."
