Six Notre Dame football players reportedly arrested in two separate incidents

Five Notre Dame football players were arrested in a traffic stop on Friday night after a police officer found a handgun and marijuana in their car when he pulled them over for speeding, according to reports.

Cornerback Ashton White, safety Max Redfield, wide receiver Kevin Stephenson, running back Dexter Williams and linebacker Te'von Coney were charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, while Redfield, Stepherson and Williams also were charged with possession of a handgun without a license.

And that wasn’t all. In a separate incident, The Observer – Notre Dame’s student newspaper – first reported that cornerback Devin Butler was arrested early Saturday on charges of battery against a police officer and resisting a police officer. That incident happened at a bar near the Notre Dame campus.

It remains to be seen whether any of the players will be suspended for the Fighting Irish’s opener against Texas on Sept. 4. The university released this statement Saturday morning:

Redfield totaled 64 tackles and an interception last season, while Coney had 13 tackles and Butler had 11. Williams carried the ball 21 times for 81 yards and a TD.
