Frederic scores quick goal as Badgers sweep Michigan

Freshman Trent Frederic set the tone early, scoring the fastest goal in program history to power the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team to a 6-4 win over Michigan on Saturday night at Kohl Center.

Frederic won the opening faceoff, before trailing the play into the zone and one-timing a pass from Matt Ustaski past Wolverines goalie Zach Nagelvoort just eight seconds into the game.

It was the first salvo in a back-and-forth battle between two Big Ten rivals.

Michigan responded 35 seconds later to make it 1-1, before taking the lead at 4:40 of the first period.

However, Frederic had an answer.

His short-handed goal with less than three minutes to play in the first made it 2-2 heading into the second period.

Wisconsin’s Aidan Cavallini opened the second period with a goal to make it 3-2 Badgers, but Joseph Cecconi tied it up again mid-way through the second period.

The two teams traded goals again in the third, as Wisconsin’s Jake Linhart and Michigan’s Adam Winborg scored less than a minute apart, before Peter Tischke broke the tie for good with a deflection at with less than 10 minutes remaining in the period.

Cavallini tacked on an empty-net goal with 37 seconds remaining to put the Badgers up by two.

Wisconsin goaltender Matt Jurusik made 34 saves, as the Wolverines outshot the Badgers 38-29.

The Badgers return to action on Friday at 7 p.m., as they head to Minneapolis to take on the University of Minnesota in their second matchup of the season.
