Brewers place Ryan Braun on 10-day disabled list

The Milwaukee Brewers placed Ryan Braun on the 10-day disabled list Friday due to a left calf sprain which has limited the outfielder for the past couple of weeks.

Braun appeared just once from May 1-8, as a pinch hitter, before returning to the starting lineup May 9. However, he reinjured himself the next game and had to leave after five innings.

In 27 games this year, Braun has a slash line of .287/.374/.948 with seven home runs, four steals, 19 runs and 18 RBI.

To take Braun's place on the roster, the Brewers selected the contract of Eric Sogard from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Sogard was not on the team's 40-man roster, but Milwaukee was carrying an open spot and could place him there without having to subtract another player.

Sogard was off to a hot start with the Sky Sox, batting .330/.421/.516 in 24 games with five steals. Sogard, who turns 31 on May 22, has considerable major-league experience having played in 435 games for Oakland from 2010-15.

However, Sogard has strictly played the infield in his career -- appearing mainly at second base for Colorado Springs this season but also seeing time at shortstop and third base. This means some combination of Hernan Perez, Eric Thames or Nick Franklin will fill in for Braun in left field.

Braun's DL stint was backdated retroactively to May 11. Brewers starting pitcher Junior Guerra remains on the disabled list with a strained calf suffered on opening day, but Braun told reporters his injury is not as severe as the pitcher's.

This is just the 69th disabled list assignment for the Brewers since 2012, which is the fewest in the major leagues over that span.
