How does the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show go from 2,800 dogs in 202 breeds to one Best in Show? Here’s everything you need to know, presented by Purina Pro Plan.

JENNY TAFT: At this year's 142nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan dogs will compete for the prestigious title of best in show. But how does that one dog make it to the winner's circle? The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan starts with 2,800 dogs across 202 breeds that each fall into one of seven groups. Those groups are hound, toy, non-sporting, herding, sporting, working, and terrier.

The dogs compete against other dogs in their breed, and the winner is named best of breed. They then head to Madison Square Garden to compete against other dogs in their American Kennel Club group. Judges will choose one dog from each group as the group winner. Finally, the seven group winners face each other for the chance to be named best in show.
