Former champ Eddie Alvarez meets Dustin Poirier at UFC 211 in Dallas

Former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is back and he's got a firefight on his hands.

Alvarez is set to face perennial bonus winner Dustin Poirier in a matchup at 155-pounds in Dallas as part of UFC 211 on May 13.

Sources confirmed the matchup to FOX Sports on Tuesday. The UFC has now made the fight official as well.

Alvarez (28-5) will look to get back on track after suffering a TKO loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 205 this past November, which cost him the UFC lightweight title.

Prior to that setback, Alvarez had won three fights in a row, including a knockout over former champion Rafael dos Anjos.

If Alvarez wants to get back into title contention, he's got a tough road ahead of him because Poirier is certainly one of the most dangerous opponents he could face right now.

Poirier has put together a very impressive 5-1 record as a lightweight in the UFC, including a "Fight of the Night" performance against Jim Miller at UFC 208 in February.

In his five wins at lightweight in the UFC, Poirier has earned three by knockout or TKO, so there's little doubt he packs a serious punch.  Now he'll look to use that knockout power to tackle Alvarez in the biggest fight of his UFC career.

Alvarez vs. Poirier joins a star-studded UFC 211 card headlined by heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic taking on Junior Dos Santos while strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk meets Jessica Andrade in the co-main event.
