Eddie Alvarez mocks Conor McGregor after threatening conference call

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:10 p.m. ET

Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will come face-to-face with Conor McGregor for the second time when they square off at the UFC 205 pre-fight press conference on Thursday in New York, but the two fighters engaged in a war of words this past week as part of a call with media ahead of the event.

Both champion and challenger had plenty to say about the other, but at one point McGregor started saying that he was going to "retire" Alvarez and when he was done with him his wife and kids would no longer recognize him.

Even mentioning someone's family would probably irritate a lot of fighters, but Alvarez couldn't help but laugh because he believes it showed a sign of weakness in McGregor that he had to clutch at those straws to try and get under his skin.

Alvarez never reacted to the comments and now he's laughing about it in the final days leading up to his fight with McGregor at UFC 205.

"Conor McGregor — this guy is so offensive minded and never on the defense that whenever you put him on the defense, he gets so flustered and so upset," Alvarez said on the new episode of "UFC Embedded". "At a certain point in our press conference call he got desperate. He started talking about my wife and kids and things like that. That for me is just a sign of desperation. You don't talk about another man's family unless you're like through the roof pissed off.

"If we were in a fight and I was putting him on the defense, I looked at this like this man is just closing his eyes throwing bolo's. Just to see him cross that, it's good. It's a good sign for me."

Meanwhile, McGregor has already arrived in New York to begin the final preparations in his attempt to win a second world title under the UFC banner. McGregor got to New York two weeks out from the fight and the latest episode of "Embedded" gives a behind the scenes look at his training and weight cut ahead of the event.

The latest episode also shows strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejzyk hard at work with her new coaches at American Top Team while her opponent Karolina Kowalkiewicz experiences New York ahead of the show.
