United States captain Carlos Bocanegra has left Rennes to join fellow French team Saint-Etienne for an undisclosed fee.

The defender played 54 matches and scored two goals for Rennes, which he joined from Fulham in 2008. The length of his contract was not disclosed.

Bocanegra led the U.S. to the second round of the World Cup last month, where it lost to Ghana.

Rennes said Friday Bocanegra will be replaced by the defender Samuel Souprayen.
