It was a banner year for the Redondo volleyball program. It entered the 2014 season with huge expectations -- the Seahawks were ranked No. 2 in the country in the Prep Volleyball preseason poll -- and delivered bringing home the first state championship in program history.

One of the many stars for the Seahawks this season was senior outside hitter Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani. For her efforts, Bedart-Ghani was named the 2014 Gatorade California Volleyball Player of the Year.

In the straight sets sweep over Turlock Pittman, Bedart-Ghani finished with a match-high 16 kills in the state final. It was her second state title after winning one as a sophomore at Marymount.

She concludes her career having won three CIF Southern Section titles in addition to her two state titles.

The Texas-bound senior was named a first team Under Armour All-American last month. She had 438 kills, 163 digs, 82 blocks, and 63 service aces while leading the Seahawks to a 39-2 record in 2014.

Bedart-Ghani is the second Redondo player to be named Gatorade California Volleyball Player of the Year. Former Seahawk and current Penn State Nittany Lion Skylar Dykstra won the award during the 2012-13 school year.

The award is given to the player that best exemplifies athletic excellence, academic excellence, and character on and off the court.

In the classroom she has a 3.0 grade point average and has spent time volunteering with Heroes of Hope Race for Research in its fight against brain tumors.
