One Lucky Dane off Kentucky Derby trail with leg injury
One Lucky Dane is out of the field for next month's Kentucky Derby after injuring himself during a workout Saturday at Santa Anita.
The 3-year-old colt lost his left front shoe shortly after the workout and was pulled up by regular rider Rafael Bejarano. One Lucky Dane has the beginning of a condylar fracture in his left front foot and will have surgery to insert two screws, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said.
One Lucky Dane is expected to be out four months.
Baffert is left with two runners for the May 2 race at Churchill Downs: probable favorite American Pharoah and undefeated Dortmund as the trainer takes aim for a fourth Derby victory.
American Pharoah galloped 1 1/2 miles over Churchill's dirt strip for the first time Saturday under exercise rider Jorge Alvarez. The colt arrived Monday from Oaklawn Park, where he won the Arkansas Derby. He will have one official workout before the Derby. Baffert said he will leave Tuesday for Churchill.
One Lucky Dane was 16th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard that determines the 20-horse field. His defection moves Madefromlucky into the field, giving trainer Todd Pletcher five horses in the race.
One Lucky Dane finished second to Dortmund in the Santa Anita Derby earlier this month. Dortmund completed five furlongs in 58.80 seconds, fastest of 59 workouts at the distance at Santa Anita. One Lucky Dane was timed in 59.20 for the same distance before getting hurt.
Among other Derby horses at Santa Anita, Sunland Derby winner Firing Line ran five furlongs in 1:00.40 under Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens. Trainer Jim Cassidy said Delta Jackpot winner Ocho Ocho Ocho, who was third in the Blue Grass, will run in the Derby.
